New 3D Scanning Service Bureau opens in Texas:

Austin, Texas — August 8, 2008...Long time Rapid Prototyping professional Mike Durham has started a 3D scanning service bureau in the Austin, Texas area called Absolute Geometries.

After extensive research, the company selected the Faro Laser Scanarm V3 scanning and touch probe hardware system, and Rapidform XOS and XOV software to start the business. Absolute Geometries specializes in Computer-aided Inspection for the Injection Molding, Casting, and RP industries but also offers Reverse Engineering Services where precise CAD models are created from the scan data.

Because of Durham's experience in Rapid Prototyping, the company offers what they call "RP Equipment Optimization". Utilizing 3D Laser Scanning and Rapidform Verify software, Absolute Geometries scans the Rapid Prototype model and overlays the scan data with the original STL file. The result is a 3D color interactive model showing the deviation between the model and the file. Every surface of the part is measured, not just selected points as when using a CMM.

"Our process helps to determine not only where the model might be out of tolerance, but also the reason why. With simple measurements, it is difficult to determine the reason for the out of tolerance dimension. With our process it is easy to see if the problem is a localized issue such as curling, warp, or scanner calibration, or a more general problem such as beam compensation, shrink, or Z offset." says Durham.

Durham says that he uses the same principles of servicing the customer that he has used for his 20 year career in Rapid Prototyping. "We have introduced the speed and affordability prominent in the Rapid Prototyping Industry to the 3D Scanning Industry"
